Hog Farming Article! Check it out!
It is clear that hog farming is surpassed in terms of targeting it as one of the most environmentally problematic industries. When the waste of one hog farm is distributed in lakes, streams and air, it produces as much waste as a small city. Most of us look too the larger corporations that emit carbon pollution to the cause of our issues. When in fact, looking at hog farming we can see that the effects are not as visible to the average citizen, therefore we ignore it. If we visited the lakes, streams and people who are affected by these hog farm byproducts, it would be apparent that this industry has created more damage to society than good.

There is no stopping these industry's, as the larger corporations own them and manage to escape the questionable actions taken against them. If we have taken our own animals and created an industry where we exploit both them and the environment in which we live, what is next? Will we be turning to human's next to fulfill this over need for consumption? If we turn to human's next, how will we exploit each other? As Karl Marx proposed in his ideology of the world as a consumer, we will eat each other up and destroy ourselves before we stop consumption all together. This notion of destroying each other is a terrifying one and a way of looking at society that is not far off from the path we are headed in.
I think we've already begin to exploit humans in our incessant need for consumption. If you look at the factory farm situation from an Environmental Justice perspective, as noted in the chapter, people in eastern North Carolina are living in an unsustainable environment for these factory farms and their health is at serious risk. Human lives are given less value than the financial gains that come from these factory farms. People's lives are at risk everyday because of choices made by other human beings, so I think we're already seeing the effects of human exploitation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with GlobeTrotter and believe that we have already begun to exploit humans in order to consume products. I agree that the factory farming industry has a total disregard for human life. They continually contaminate the water and put local farms out of business. Furthermore, humans in many other countries are continually exploited to help satisfy the consumptive needs of the western world. We have already begun to see humans as disposable beings, just as farm animals are. Their sole purpose in life is to satisfy the needs of others, just as pig’s purpose is to satisfy our hunger. Both exploited individuals and animals may see themselves as more than satisfying mechanisms, but the larger social masses forget about them in the mix. Those who satisfy the western worlds 'wants' are commonly forgotten and this is why we disregard the treatment of both animals and humans, specifically so we can consume without thinking about the external impacts.
